Long thought to be poisonous…research has shown that only the fleshy arils surrounding the seed become edible after the fruit fully opens on its own and the arils are exposed to fresh air (seeds and other fruit parts are always toxic). A beautiful tree, common in the Carribean and Africa where it is used in cultural dishes.
