This is the most common genus of bamboo with species ranging from the very small to the very very large.  Bamboo in this genus always have three dominant branches projecting from a developing culm node,  the mid-branch being larger than the other two.  While both the foliage and culm size vary greatly from species to species, none in this genus have the huge leaves of some of the other generas.

Species:

B. vulgaris ‘Wamin’ (Giant Budda’s Belly): A smaller bamboo with long, narrow green leaves.  The large diameter culm internodes develop a bulging form on the lower 6 to 9 feet of the culms.  These swollen internodes are unusual and will definitely attract attention. (H 16’, D 3”,  27°F)
